Oops… Forefront Endpoint Protection 2010 update snafu!

Yesterday’s definition update for Forefront Endpoint Protection and Security Essentials apparently wasn’t tested by Microsoft as the engines flagged a temp file in the update as Adware:Win32/Hotbar. I experienced this as well, but just removed after some investigation, I just let FEP remove the file and all was fine.  It was a temp file anyway and the definition was already installed and fine as is.

Before going to bed I checked, and sure enough at 9:30pm CDT, the updated definition files were installed by Windows Update.  I could see where this could be a problem for large FEP environments though.  I would think though that you can use SCCM to suppress the warnings for the user and then just deal with the reports and alerts from there.

This was posted on the Microsoft Malware Protection Center:

On Jul 21, 2011 05:35 AM UTC, an update caused a temporary file related to the next Microsoft definition update to be incorrectly detected as Adware:Win32/Hotbar. At 08:51 PM UTC, Microsoft released a new signature to address the issue. Signature versions 1.109.92.0 and higher include this fix.

I’m hearing a lot of upset customers screaming at Microsoft for this.   Really?  No sense in getting wound up over a simple mistake.  It wasn’t even a virus, but just a typo in signature file that was caught.  Things happen, people make mistakes.  Exchange volumes were not formatted twice over because of it… move on.

OCS is now Microsoft Lync

I’m a little slow with the news lately, but I just found out that Microsoft OCS is now Microsoft Lync.  What’s also new is that the Release Candidate is now out as well!!

Time to start playing in the lab!  Too bad I wasn’t working for a partner that had an actual relationship with Microsoft where I could have been playing with it sooner.   More on that later…

ASA 5510-BUN-K9 Unlimited License for sale

I have an ASA 5510-BUN-K9 with an unlimited license for sale. It has some damage to the faceplate and the corners but boots and works perfectly. Make me an offer.

Oh the Irony!

So, I’m watching Steve Ballmer’s CES keynote, and during the Windows 7 demonstrations, my laptop, running Windows 7 BSOD’s.

I never laughed so hard in my life (over techie stuff anyway).  Derrick Stone trying to start a fight with me naked in the MVWA locker room was WAY funnier.

So I reconnect and some guys are singing about making love…weird.

New design!

Well, new template anyway.  I don’t have the time, nor creative juices to do a scratch design anymore, so I just use the templates I find out on the internet.  This site is about my words, not my design anyway.  :)

The Mustang finally did me in…

…Or something like that. Maybe the title of this post should read: “WAOW Channel 9 are nothing but paparattzi”. Well, there’s the Mustang in all it’s powerful glory. Maybe if I would have just stood my ground with Melissa we would have never gotten this deathtrap. But you know me…I’m a sucker for my wife.

So I decide it’s time to get rid of the Mustang. I really wanted to go test drive the Saturn Vue at Saturn of Wausau. It wasn’t snowing all that hard but once I got on the highway, it really started to come down. I slowed down to about 45MPH-ish. The WAOW truck was merging onto Hwy 51/I-39 and being the courteous driver I am, I slowed down and moved over to allow it to merge onto the highway. As I moved back to the somewhat clear right lane after the WAOW truck merged into traffic, he decided to brake and pull over rather quickly. There was a jacknifed trailer on the other side of the highway. As I quickly slowed down to avoid hitting the van, my wonderful RWD caused me to slide into the other lane and thus slamming into another truck coming pretty fast down the left lane.

What bugs me more is that instead of getting out of the van and seeing if we were OK, he just whipped out his camera and started filming the whole deal.  I wanted to flip him off, but the state trooper was standing next to me.  I didn’t feel like going to jail.

The worst part?  I GOT A TICKET!!!???  I’ll definitely be fighting that one.

Isn’t it lovely? The pony deathtrap almost done me in. The claims adjuster thinks it’s borderline totaled, and we should know more tomorrow. I hope it’s totaled. I never want to drive that car again. I’ve had two near death experiences with that car and I never want to drive another foot in it. It’s done.

Since then, I’ve test driven the Jeep Compass, Saturn Vue and Chevy HHR LT1. And I never thought this before, but I think I like the HHR best. It’s not a speed demon, but it handles the best of them and has great gas mileage.

Now lets see what the insurance and the bank says…

Here we go…

My first post on the new version 2.0 of jakekappus.com.  Please, hold your excitement.  Really…

I’m going to try and keep this thing somewhat relevant and noteworthy.  Hopefully someone will read it.
